About Course

SmartAssess AI is a professional development workshop under the JomoRC SmartEdu AI Programme, designed to equip teachers and lecturers with practical skills for applying artificial intelligence to the student assessment lifecycle.

The workshop focuses particularly on assessments that require substantial human reading, interpretation and written feedback, including essays, theory examinations, assignments, case studies, reflective writing, project reports and other open-ended responses.

Rather than positioning AI as a replacement for educators, SmartAssess AI introduces a human-supervised AI-assisted assessment model in which artificial intelligence supports repetitive and analytical tasks while the educator retains responsibility for academic judgment, moderation, context and final decisions.

The programme therefore moves beyond the narrow concept of “AI marking” to a broader framework covering:

Assessment Design → Rubric Development → AI-Assisted Evaluation → Moderation → Personalised Feedback → Performance Analysis → Learning Intervention

The workshop is designed to help educators reduce assessment workload, improve consistency, produce richer feedback, identify learning gaps and make better instructional decisions.

This approach is consistent with JomoRC’s broader programme philosophy of practical, competency-based learning and measurable outcomes. The DigitalCLIP blueprint, for example, establishes a framework built around curriculum quality, practical application, monitoring, continuous improvement and stakeholder partnerships.

What Will You Learn?

  • By the end of each workshop cohort, participants should be able to:
  • Explain the opportunities, limitations and appropriate applications of AI in student assessment.
  • Design assessment questions and marking frameworks using AI-assisted workflows.
  • Develop structured rubrics and criteria suitable for consistent evaluation.
  • Use AI tools to assist in evaluating open-ended student responses.
  • Generate personalised, actionable feedback for individual students.
  • Use AI to identify patterns, misconceptions and learning gaps within assessment results.
  • Conduct human moderation of AI-assisted assessment outputs.
  • Apply responsible practices relating to student data, privacy, bias, transparency and academic integrity.
  • Build a repeatable AI-assisted assessment workflow suited to their own educational context.

Course Content

MODULE 1: AI & THE FUTURE OF STUDENT ASSESSMENT
Participants understand the role of AI within the assessment process and can distinguish between appropriate assistance and inappropriate automation.

  • Lesson 1: Understanding AI-Assisted Assessment
  • Lesson 2: What AI Can and Cannot Do in Assessment
  • Lesson 3: Human-in-the-Loop Assessment
  • Lesson 4: AI, Assessment Quality and Consistency
  • Lesson 5: Common Mistakes in AI-Assisted Assessment

MODULE 2: AI-ASSISTED ASSESSMENT DESIGN
Each participant develops a complete: AI-Assisted Assessment Pack containing questions, learning objectives, marking criteria and rubric.

MODULE 3: AI-ASSISTED MARKING & EVALUATION
Core Workflow: Student Response → Rubric → Evidence → Evaluation → Proposed Score → Human Review

MODULE 4: PERSONALISED AI FEEDBACK
Each participant produces an example: AI-Assisted Personalised Student Feedback Report

MODULE 5: ASSESSMENT ANALYTICS & MODERATION
Participants produce a: Class Assessment Insight Report showing strengths, weaknesses, common errors and recommended instructional responses.

MODULE 6: RESPONSIBLE AI IN EDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENT
Participants create a: Responsible AI Assessment Checklist for use within their classroom, department or institution.
