About Course

Artificial Intelligence is changing how students study, research, prepare for examinations, complete academic tasks and access learning support.

But having access to AI does not automatically make a student a better learner.

Used intelligently, AI can help students understand difficult concepts, receive alternative explanations, practise with questions, organise study materials, prepare for examinations and learn more independently.

Used poorly, the same technology can encourage copying, misinformation, overdependence and the gradual loss of independent thinking.

SmartLearn Virtual Conference 2026 is a free self-paced learning programme designed to help students understand these opportunities and risks and develop a smarter approach to learning in an AI-powered world.

Across three practical sessions, learners will first examine the real challenges that affect their learning and discover the power of leverage. They will then explore how Artificial Intelligence can become either a Learning Partner or an Answer Machine, depending on how it is used. Finally, they will be introduced to the SmartLearn approach to structured, responsible AI-assisted learning.

The programme is built around one central principle:

Don’t let AI think for you. Let AI help you think better.

The objective is not simply to teach students how to use AI tools, but to help them become more effective, responsible and independent learners.

What Will You Learn?

  • Identify common learning challenges that can affect academic performance and independent study.
  • Explain the concept of leverage and how students can leverage people, knowledge, systems and technology to improve learning.
  • Recognise the difference between lack of resources and lack of resourcefulness.
  • Explain Artificial Intelligence and generative AI in simple learning-related terms.
  • Identify practical ways AI can support understanding, study, revision, research, examination preparation and feedback.
  • Recognise the limitations of AI, including inaccurate information, misinformation and fabricated outputs.
  • Distinguish between using AI as a Learning Partner and using AI as an Answer Machine.
  • Differentiate productive AI assistance from AI misuse and overdependence.
  • Evaluate their own AI-learning habits and identify behaviours that may increase the risk of dependency.
  • Understand the importance of independent thinking, active practice, verification, academic integrity and responsible AI use.
  • Understand the basic SmartLearn approach to structured AI-assisted learning.
  • Explain the L.E.A.R.N. AI Framework: Learn → Explore → Apply → Review → Navigate.
  • Identify gaps in their current learning system that could be improved through structured AI-assisted learning.
  • Recognise the difference between merely having access to AI and developing a repeatable Personal AI Learning System.
